State-of-the-Art Treatment, Caring Specialists
Using the latest diagnostic technology available, from state-of-the-art mammography equipment to CT scanners, Bozeman Deaconess Hospital's expert cancer team of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, urologists, OB/GYNs, gastroenterologists, dermatologists and pathologists work together to effectively diagnose and treat cancer wherever it strikes.
The newly integrated Cancer Center opened in May 2006 and places medical oncology and radiation oncology services together in an expanded cancer healing center. The new physically integrated center promotes a team approach to oncology care. Patients have a more comfortable space in a single location, which provides a more coordinated approach and will allow ease of access for physicians to conference on cases.
Coordinated Care Provided by Specialists
The Bozeman Deaconess Cancer Center treats cancer patients primarily on an outpatient basis. Cancer is treated using a variety of measures including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or biological therapy.
Patients with cancer are usually treated by a team of specialists, which may include a medical oncologist, a surgeon, a radiation oncologist and others. The Center also staffs an array of specialists including a dosimetrist, a physicist and a radiation therapist who work together to provide you with the best treatment possible.
Our Services
3 Tesla (3T) Siemens® Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)The state-of-the-art 3 Tesla (3T) Siemens® magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a 70 cm wide bore and advanced coil technology is the first magnet of its type west of the Mississippi River; other centers with this technology include Johns Hopkins and Medical University of South Carolina.
The wide bore size can better accommodate larger patients and allows for patients to be placed in various positions inside the magnet, which also improves patient comfort during the exam. Moreover, the resolution provided by the system is higher and allows for better detection.
The system provides broader benefits to clinical providers since it comes with specialized software and coils to assist in oncology, neurology, cardiology and orthopedic specialized exams.4-D Scanner Plans More Precise Radiation Treatments The Bozeman Deaconess Cancer Center recently installed the region’s first wide bore digital simulator (Computed “CT” scanner)—literally, the first step in planning radiation treatments. Computed Tomography (CT) provides high-resolution images allowing precise organ and tumor localization for simulation and treatment planning. The new technology maps four dimensionally (4-D), including tissue in motion, to quickly and efficiently acquire all the accurate tissue measurements to plan the most precise radiation treatment possible.
The General Electric 4-D LightSpeed® RT is the first multi-slice wide bore CT scanner dedicated to radiotherapy. It delivers the power needed for advanced, accurate and productive 16-slice CT imaging for radiation therapy. With its multi-slice CT scanning capabilities, the LightSpeed RT provides thin, clear images for precise tumor delineation. The Light Speed scanner is a platform for future CT technologies supported by advanced applications such as 4D Respiratory Gating, CT Simulation, Image Fusion and complex treatment planning.
CT is the foundation of the oncology patient data set offering precise geometric and density information contributing to excellent anatomical information. Multi-slice CT scanners acquire thin slices that give excellent resolution on the X, Y and Z planes including motion (4D) of the patient. This level of resolution on all three planes greatly facilitates high to most optimal treatment planning and delivery including intensity modulated radiation therapy. Brachytherapy Nucletron® high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy unit is used to treat certain breast and gynecologic cancers. Brachytherapy is radiation delivered from the inside out. Potent, radioactive material, in the form of a rice-sized bead at the tip of a retractable wire, is inserted directly into cancerous tissue for a brief, intense, high dose.
Unlike traditional prostate brachytherapy where low-dose radioactive seeds are permanently placed near the cancer, HDR brachytherapy is not an implant. Rather, HDR is delivered via a single radioactive bead. The tiny treatment bead, which is replaced every four months when it's no longer as potent, is housed in a small robot-like machine, the Nucletron. A portal in the Nucletron delivers the treatment source wire through a hollow catheter tube to specialized plastic applicators that are attached to a surgically placed temporary balloon catheter in the tumor site cavity. Following each preplanned and image guided treatment, the source wire retracts to the Nucletron for safe storage.
In some cases, the new HDR treatment replaces external beam therapy while in others it's given in addition to conventional external beam and, if needed, chemotherapy. The pinpoint accuracy of the IMRT beam has several vital advantages for cancer patients, the most significant being its ability to maximize the dose of radiation to the cancerous tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue from unnecessary exposure. IMRT technology is so advanced that it can protect “good cells” as it destroys the tumor. As such, IMRT patients typically experience fewer side effects from high dose radiation, which helps them to remain stronger and lead more normal lifestyles during treatment.
Linear Accelerator The Bozeman Deaconess Cancer Center’s Varian 2100C linear accelerator, used for external beam radiation treatments to treat patients with cancer, has been upgraded to provide the best of technology. The new millennium 120 MLC gives Bozeman Deaconess the opportunity to design fields that shape the beam in a much more precise and sophisticated way. The new equipment is not only more precise, it’s safer for surrounding healthy tissue. Pain ManagementOur Palliative Care team provides care to patients and family members when pain and other symptoms impair their quality of life. Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers, pastoral counselors, bereavement counselors, volunteers and other healthcare professionals focuses on relieving pain and other distressing symptoms of patients with acute or chronic illnesses. We are experienced in managing many of the symptoms that accompany serious illnesses
Our pain specialists understand that pain does not have to be a part of living. They provide expert relief of pain. A great deal has been learned about controlling pain, fatigue, nausea and the Palliative Care team offers a range of medications and therapies so patients and families do not have to suffer.
Some patients experience the complete end of pain, but this level of success is not possible for everyone. Patients whose pain cannot be eliminated often find their pain significantly reduced. Spiritual Care Spiritual Care is an essential part of healing at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. The hospital chapel is open at all times for prayer, meditation, or private time for individuals and families. It is an inclusive place welcoming to people of all faiths or with no faith tradition. We invite you to walk around, sit in stillness, and know peace and healing in this sacred space.
